Excerpt from Dante and His Ideal

The object of this little book is twofold. On the one hand, it appeals to those who take delight in watching the growth of ideals, and more particularly in the fourteenth century; and, on the other, it endeavours to lay before the reader a consistent View of Dante's trilogy, according to the well-known theory of the late Dr. Karl Witte, which, in spite of all that has been said against it, seems to me the one most adequate to explain the facts.
