THE object of the compiler of this Digest has been to prepare a book convenient for the members of the legal profession; and so to arrange the laws, and the decisions of the courts, as to render them plain and easy of reference to magistrates and to other officers, and to citizens in ! general, whose rights and duties are so deeply affected by them. Besides the points directly decided, the notes of judicial decisions often contain familiar principles of law, necessarily involved in, or growing out of the judgment in the particular case. In some instances, where it seemed mportant, extracts from elementary treatises, and the decisions of courts ut of this state, have been added.

$

Most of the laws, applying only to particular counties, townships, cities or places, have been necessarily omitted, being too numerous to

i be inserted, and therefore not coming within the plan of the work. Repealed and executed sections, and the sections repealing prior acts, have also been generally omitted. The pages in the margin of this edition correspond with those of the second edition, published in 1855. The abbreviation (R. S.) refers to the Revised Statutes of 1847; subsequent acts are copied from the pamphlets annually printed by authority of the legislature. Several errors were discovered in those volumes; but as they are errors in the originals, the compiler did not feel authorized to correct them.

1

In the title TERMS OF COURTS, page 963, the Courts of Somerset, FIFTH DISTRICT, were omitted. They are held on the third Tuesdays of April, September, and December.

It will be perceived that a few acts were inadvertently omitted in their proper places, and will be found at page 1066, belonging to the Titles BUTTER AND CHEESE, CHOSEN FREEHOLDERS, CONVEYANCES, ELECTIONS,

EXECUTIONS.
